Walking into a gym for the first time can feel like arriving at a party where everyone else already knows the rules. Where do the weights go? Can you use that machine? Is anyone watching? The good news is that gym etiquette for beginners is mostly common courtesy. At Mates Gym, the 24/7 gym in Mount Druitt, we run a no-judgment policy, so everyone is welcome regardless of shape, size, age or fitness level. Keep reading for eight unwritten rules that will help you train with confidence from your very first session.
Why Gym Etiquette Matters
Mates Gym covers 1200 sqm with over 90 pieces of equipment, and members share every inch of it. A few simple habits keep the floor safe, clean, and motivating for everyone. They also help you feel like you belong, which is the best way to stay consistent.
1. Wipe Down Your Equipment
Sweat happens, and nobody wants to sit in someone else’s. Wipe benches, handles, and machine seats after every use, and before if they need it. It takes ten seconds and is the most important of all the gym etiquette basics.
2. Re-Rack Your Weights
Put dumbbells, plates, and bars back where you found them. Racking your weights saves the next person from hunting for a matching pair and prevents trip hazards. Whether you’re in our Life Fitness equipped strength area or lifting with the Hammer Strength range, a tidy floor is a safe floor. Strip plates off bars when you finish.
3. Share Machines and Ask to Work In
On a busy night, long rests on one machine can hold everyone up. Keep your rest sensible and save the scrolling for after your workout. If you need a machine someone is using, simply ask, “Mind if I work in between sets?” Most members are happy to share.
4. Give People Space
Stay out of the mirror line when someone is lifting, and don’t walk through the middle of a set. Leave a little room around the person next to you, particularly in the free weights area and our functional area, where kettlebells, sleds and bodyweight circuits need room to move.
5. Handle Weights With Care
Lower weights under control instead of dropping them, unless the exercise requires it. Check your surroundings before you swing a dumbbell or step back with a bar. Careful habits protect you and everyone around you.
6. Leave the Coaching to the Coaches
It’s tempting to correct someone’s form or to take advice from a stranger. Skip both. Unsolicited tips can feel awkward, and what works for one body may not suit another. If you’re unsure about technique, ask one of our personal trainers. A tailored program is the fastest way to learn properly.
7. Keep Hygiene and Phone Use in Check
Wear clean gym clothes, use deodorant, and go easy on perfume. Use headphones for music or videos, and take calls off the gym floor. Never film other members without their permission. Everyone deserves to train without worrying about a camera.
8. Respect the Shared Amenities
Keep the showers and change areas tidy, and don’t take longer than you need so others can freshen up. Our massive showers and amenities are there for everyone. Pop your towel and bottle in your bag rather than leaving them on benches.
Gym Etiquette at a 24/7 Gym
Training at 2am is a different experience from 6pm. Late at night or early in the morning, keep noise down, be aware of members training alone, and let someone know your plans. Quieter hours can also suit beginners who want to learn at their own pace. Not sure when to go? Our guide to the best times to train at a 24/7 gym helps you match sessions to your schedule.
Class and Special-Area Etiquette
Arrive on time, set up your own space, and tell the instructor if you need to leave early. Wipe down gloves and gear in our open boxing area, and wait your turn on shared equipment. Beginners are welcome in every session, from Zumba and Bhangra to Bollywood and challenge classes, so check the class timetable. Parents can use our gym with creche; please follow the creche guidelines so the kids and staff stay safe.
Common Beginner Mistakes (and Why They’re Okay)
You’ll probably use a machine the wrong way, forget to re-rack a weight, or worry that people are watching. Everyone has. Most members are focused on their own workout, and our team would rather you ask than guess. Mistakes are how every member learned.
